The Combe Down Stone Mines Project is nearly finished

There was once many miles of mines under Combe Down, Bath. These were the result of mining for Bath stone - which only came from Combe Down. This stone was used for houses in Bath, Windsor Castle, Buckingham Palace and many other buildings.

It took many years before gaping holes started to appear in gardens, houses started to subside and roads become potentially dangerous. So, around 10 years ago, the funding of several hundred million pounds became available to fill in the mine chambers and work started.

Now the work is nearly complete so to celebrate the organisations involved in doing the work (extensively Hydrock) arranged a party today for Combe Down, in the Firs field where they had their main plant. It's not often that school children sing a song that includes "Hurray For Hydrock" .

You can take this Granny home with you for a week if you like - she can't do much except for knitting.
